GRENINJA (Week 3 - GRENINJA Water Week 3 - GRENINJA Dark)

Week 3 - GRENINJA K4WphDe

Type: Water/ Dark

Torrent - When HP is below 1/3rd, Base Power of Water-type attacks increase to 1.5 times.

Protean - Before the Pokémon uses a move, it becomes a pure Pokémon of that type.

Stats: (HP/ Atk/ Def/ SpA/ SpD/ Spe)

72/ 95/ 67/ 103/ 71/ 122

Introduction: Week 3 - GRENINJA 658

Being the Ninja-themed Starter of this Generation, it is no surprise that Greninja is the fastest Water-type as of yet. But Speed isn't the main reason why this amphibian has become one of the most common faces in the XY OU ladder. The game-breaking Ability called Protean is what cemented the ninja frog's success. Being able to change its type according to the move it just used basically means that Greninja gets STAB in each offensive move. With good offensive stats and a super Speed stat, Greninja acts as an effective anti-lead and a late-game sweeper.

Positives: Week 3 - GRENINJA 658
• First and foremost, Protean is an amazing offensive Ability that gives x1.5 boost to each damaging move used.
• 122 is a very high Speed stat, which enables Greninja to outspeed threats such as Alakazam, Gengar, Starmie, Latios etc.
• While 95 Attack and 103 Special Attack may not look like much, with the boost from Protean, Greninja is able to leave large dents on the opponent's team.
• Constantly changing types can let you trick your opponent and catch them off-guard. e.g. Using Spikes to be immune to an otherwise super-effective Electric-type attack.
• Greninja has a wide movepool that complements the wide range of types it can turn into thanks to Protean.
• In addition to amazing Speed, Greninja has priority moves such as Water Shuriken and Shadow Sneak to catch faster opponents.

Negatives: Week 3 - GRENINJA 658
• Bad bulk, can be 2HKO'd by strong neutral attacks easily.
• Anything faster with super-effective moves or strong priority attacks are its bane.
• Unable to boost its stats using set-up moves (other than Power-up Punch).
• Greninja sets has become quite predictable and experienced players can take advantage of Protean's type changing to land unexpected super-effective blows.

Set #1: Teenage Mutant Ninja Frog Week 3 - GRENINJA Greninja-4

Greninja @ Life Orb
Trait: Protean
EVs: 4 Atk/ 252 SAtk/ 252 Spe
Hasty Nature (+Spe, -Def)
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- U-turn

The standard mixed Greninja, providing plenty of hurt all around. With Life Orb and STAB boost, Greninja manages to check and threaten a wide variety of common OU mons, especially with an amazing Water/ Dark/ Ice offensive combination.

Surf is the good ol' reliable Water-type attack, and Ice Beam covers the Grass and Dragon-types that resist Water. Dark Pulse hits pesky threats such as Aegislash and Gengar and is the best bet against Rotom-Wash and Tentacruel, as far as this set is concerned. Keep in mind that Protean doesn't stop the secondary chances of moves (unlike Sheer Force) so Ice Beam can still cause random freezes and Dark Pulse can cause annoying flinches.

U-Turn can hit Tyranitar and Celebi reasonably hard, but mostly, it is best used as a last ditch hit against a Special Tank, or to simply scout the opponent's team.
Set #2: Gamabunta Week 3 - GRENINJA Greninja-3

Greninja @ Life Orb
Trait: Protean
EVs: 4 HP/ 252 SAtk/ 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Hidden Power Fire

Entirely devoted to destruction from the special side, Hydro Pump hits amazingly hard despite the risk of accuracy. Ice Beam and Dark Pulse are there for the same reason as above.

Being a total Special Attacker set, this Greninja forgoes the suprising U-turn for the valuable Hidden Power Fire, which can OHKO the Steel-types that aren't otherwise weak to Water or Dark. This means Scizor, Ferrothorn, Skarmory and the likes won't enjoy battling this combatant amphibian.

Grass Knot is a noteworthy option here due to being able to hit Water-types for super-effective damage. It also dishes out a lot of pain against Tyranitar.
Extrasensory can be used to nail Specially Defensive Tentacruel that is resistant to Water and Ice.
Set #3: Element of Surprise Week 3 - GRENINJA Greninja-2

Greninja @ Life Orb
Trait: Protean
EVs: 4 HP/ 252 Atk/ 252 Spe
Jolly Nature (+Spe, -SAtk)
- Water Shuriken
- Power-up Punch
- Shadow Sneak
- U-Turn

A ninja is nothing without its ability to surprise its opponents, and that is exactly what this Greninja set aspires to achieve.

Power-up Punch is the main move here, as each hit raises Greninja's Attack stat, making all the next moves stronger than before.
Water Shuriken is the ninja frog's signature move, and is the first multi-hit priority. Being able to break through Sturdy and Substitute at +1 priority is all in a day's work for this Water-type starter. This move can take care of the super-common Talonflame and Heatran with ease.
Shadow Sneak is another awesome priority attack, making Greninja immune to incoming Mach Punches.
U-Turn is to safely switch out when Greninja has done enough, leaving behind chunks of HP off the foe.

Damage Calculations

From Greninja

252 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 333-395 (94.6 - 112.2%)

252 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Gastrodon: 395-468 (92.7 - 109.8%)

252 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Grass Knot (100 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Jellicent: 252-299 (62.3 - 74%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

To Greninja

252 Atk Life Orb Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 257-304 (89.8 - 106.2%)

4 SpA Rotom-W Volt Switch vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 210-248 (73.4 - 86.7%)

Other Options: Week 3 - GRENINJA 658

Spikes/ Toxic Spikes, obviously, are learned by the ninja frog, and can be used in any sets. Greninja has enough offensive capabilities to KO Rapid Spin/ Defog users and can even become a Spinblocker itself through the use of Shadow Sneak or Hidden Power Ghost.

Taunt, especially coming from Greninja's Speed, can shut down walls and set-up sweepers, allowing Greninja more space to wreak havoc.

Expert Belt can be used over Life Orb, but that's about all the items Greninja can effectively use without hampering its attacking standards. Choice items are a no-go for it because it constantly needs to change moves to be as effective as possible.

Item-less Acrobatics, Aerial Ace, Waterfall, Night Slash, Rock Slide, Return can be used in its Physical set.

Hidden Power of any type can be used for Greninja to fit your team's needs, but with Water/ Dark/ Ice already present, Hidden Power Fire is mostly what it will always need.

Checks/ Counters:

Week 3 - GRENINJA 242Being mostly a Special Attacker, Special Walls that aren't weak to Greninja's common moves can stop it in its tracks. Blissey, Chansey, Florges, Sylveon, Regice are especially bulky and can wear down Greninja with status moves and steady recovery.

Week 3 - GRENINJA 184Azumarill resists Water, Dark, Ice and Bug, four most common types Greninja will be turning into. It is, however weak to Grass Knot.

Week 3 - GRENINJA 073Tentacruel can usually stop Greninja unless there's Extrasensory. Same for Ferrothorn against a Greninja lacking Hidden Power Fire.

Week 3 - GRENINJA 534 Arguably, the best way to take down Greninja is through strong priority attacks. Conkeldurr Mach Punch, Talonflame Brave Bird, Dragonite Extremespeed and the list go on. Also, if Greninja is unable to land a KO on the opponent, chances are that it will be the getting KO'd that turn.

Week 3 - GRENINJA ChoicescarfChoice Scarf Revenge Killers with at least decent offensive stats can outspeed Greninja and finish it off.

As Greninja is almost always holding Life Orb, poison/ burn will drain its HP even more. Paralysis is worse as it loses its beautiful Speed stat hence gets susceptible to be KO'd by otherwise slower Pokémon.
